But the 15.3% SE tax is still there.
Everyone pays 1/2 of that, self-employed pay both the employee and employer parts.

It is not trivial to compare, but I have definitely done better in that past 7 years of self-employment than I ever did in a regular job. More important, I have a lot more control over my time.
