Sounds like the Vietnam negotiations broke off without a deal.

What Trump is selling to Kim is an opportunity to preside not over a Gulag... or, possibly, over a nuclear desert... BUT over an economic miracle. A chance to become a true father of a new nation. That would be great, a win-win deal for millions of people and for the whole world.

Kim, apparently, wanted concessions from the US in return for partial denuclearization. That would be hard for Trump to do. OTOH, if Kim comes off looking weak, that could be the end of Kim - and of a chance to work out a deal.

Kim's generals are aware of the Soviet experience. They gave away everything, asking for nothing - and in return were called - and were treated like - a 3rd world sh*thole. Bill Clinton totally ignored their objections wrt bombing their brothers the Serbs.

Bottom line - the negotiations are still in progress, it may have been in the interests of both sides to walk away this time, to act as strong negotiators. Actually, Kim's smarts (and survival instincts) are impressive.

I think there is every reason to remain optimistic.
