Sep 23, 1999 (Asia Pulse via COMTEX) -- (Full text of a statement. Contact details below.)
SINGAPORE Sept 23 Asia Pulse - Singapore Cable Vision (SCV) has selected a combination of technology solutions and services from Cisco Systems, Inc., and Compaq Computer Asia Pacific's Professional Services (formerly known as Network and Systems Integration Services), to supply the core head-end equipment for its impending cable modem service. SCV's network is capable of supporting data, voice and video to cable modems, set-top boxes and advanced broadband appliances.
The solution from Cisco Systems and Compaq Computer Asia Pacific includes Cisco's Universal Broadband Router (uBR) family which combines a DOCSIS-(Data-over-Cable Service Interface Specification) compliant cable modem termination system (CMTS) and a Cisco IOS. software powered service provider class router within one RF hardened rack mounted package.
The uBR is the industry's leading digital head-end solution and offers by far the widest selection of local and wide area optical, wire and wireless connectivity. By combining essential routing, CMTS and LAN/WAN functionality at competitive prices, the uBR conserves valuable head-end rack space and allows cable operators to deploy routing and network intelligence in every CMTS location, improving network performance and manageability. Most importantly, Cisco's uBR family is DOCSIS-compliant allowing cable providers such as SCV to connect DOCSIS-compliant cable modems from any manufacturer into the network.
"The solution proposed is an open standards-based platform and a cost-effective one. It will play an important role in SCV's offering of future interactive services such as high-speed data services over our broadband network," said Mr Yong Lum Sung, President of SCV.
"We are extremely pleased to be given this opportunity to play a role in the development of Singapore Cable Vision's island-wide broadband cable modem network. With the completion of the network, Singapore's communications infrastructure is among the most advanced in the world. The penetration of advanced cable services into almost every household in the country will give Singapore a powerful edge as we move into the Internet Economy," said Mr Todd Abbott, Managing Director, Asia, Cisco Systems.
"Compaq Computer Asia Pacific is glad to support Singapore Cable Vision's development and implementation of an island-wide digital broadband network. Together with Cisco Systems' technology and our services and support, we believe that subscribers will enjoy the best in entertainment, shopping and learning experiences and video-conferencing right at the home," said Dr Kaizad Heerjee, Asia Region Director for Professional Services, Compaq Computer Asia Pacific.
