My ADSL does not tie up my phone line. There is no interference whatsoever. I'm not sure how CAWS does it, but I know that with ADSL you can beam in digital TV, have many connections to Internet, computers Etc., and talk on the phone at the same time. I believe I am also supposed to be able to fax while this is going on, but I have no Idea how to do this yet, because my ADSL doesn't dial up or connect to anything. Right now while I am typing this I am on the phone, connected to AOL, have three other browsers open to three other sections of the Internet, and am downloading two files. Quickly. It is pretty versatile.
