>> We don't do that

Amen, brother!

"Hey, Bill. What we really need to do is build an SDM abstract object layer into Windows 2.0. Then we won't need a fancy clipboard, OLE, and all that cruft. Let's make people's data become information by putting the semantics in the data, not in the programs. This will save thousands of programmers millions of man-hours in the future ... and save the users billions of man-hours. As we move onto networks, we can share these objects with a global directory service ... saving more millions of man-hours for organizations. Look at Augment on ARPAnet or SDM on Multics ... that's the way to go. Oh, yeah, and we need a visual programming language, like Basic or Logo or something, that let's everyone program by composing with active objects. Here's my design."

"The user's aren't asking for that."

"Wordstar doesn't have it."

"Novell doesn't do that."

So, because of this "legacy thinking in decision spaces", we are stuck with OLE, cut-and-paste, and 56 non-pervasive database systems with weak semantics.

We piss on the shoes of giants.

(I really ought to get over being bitter about this.)
