As you know, chaps, I have been raising the issue of Linux support with Wind, so far the silence has been deafening.
I think embedded Linux is a threat to Wind, indeed at the Embedded Systems show there were at least three new startups demonstrating embedded Linux solutions. Hard real time is not the issue: the really explosive growth is in soft realt-time internet appliances, and Linux is well able to perform this job. And the point about rapid growth of applications is a key one: consider, do you as a developer of a device want to license VxWorks (Tornado) and Personal Java for about $30K, or spend 1 man month putting Linux with Java on your board? The answer is not absolutely clear, but many organizations will take the Linux approach simply because of the low to zero up-front cost.

This is the real threat, and also the real opportunity for Wind. Wind: I call on you to cut the entrance cost of your tools to be competetive with Linux, and to put Linux on top of VxWorks as an option.

Anyone listening? Allen Benn?
