Hilfiger Up -3: Clothes Makers Gain Ground: Analyst ï

02 Feb 14:28

Prudential's Pak wrote that she upgraded Hilfiger because the "balance of
power between the apparel manufacturers and the department stores has shifted
in favor of the apparel manufacturers."

Prudential's thesis going into the holiday quarter was that "estimates had to
come down in the apparel manufacturing sector because department stores were
discounting heavily," Pak wrote.

In fact, apparel manufacturers such as Liz Claiborne Inc. (LIZ) and Jones
Apparel Group Inc. (JNY) have affirmed their original fourth-quarter estimates,
while Nautica Enterprise Inc. (NAUT) met estimates and Hilfiger beat estimates.

"These events led us to believe that the balance of power ... may not be
tilted so much in favor of the department stores after all," she wrote. "The
manufacturers look to be getting smarter and more disciplined, and we thinks
that's a key reason to get more positive on the group."
In addition, Pak wrote that apparel manufacturers are "early cycle stocks"
that will continue to benefit as money flows into the sector. "In the near
term, we believe the sector will be supported by the potential for additional
rate cuts and a tax cut."

And Hilfiger's difficult year could have a benefit. "TOM is coming off a
tough year, comparisons are therefore easy and out sense it investors are
attracted to stories with the potential for a fundamental recovery," she wrote.
