But, George... I have no problem knowing what I think about any particular topic... so I've no need to 'pay more attention' to THAT.

That's easy.

Knowing what all my fellow Americans think about the same topics though is of course harder. No one can be everywhere, or talk to everyone, which is why scientific methods of polling come play.

In a Democratic nation it's not only important and necessary for the nation to know what it's citizens think --- it's required for good functioning of government.

I'd argue that it's a patriotic imperative.
