But how can you explain sticking with the propaganda for so long... after the Pentagon's conclusions?

They have made clear that that's the word they received from the field (friendly fire) almost immediately.

Even if you want to hang your hat on the technicality that the official report hadn't been officially accepted yet --- that doesn't give them a 'bye' to state things at the funeral that they almost certainly knew to be false as if they were 'confirmed facts', which they most assuredly were NOT.
