There is no doubt that having the GOP controlled by moderates and liberals makes it that much less likely to inspire the core group that forms the base of the party. These liberal-lights need to take a page out of Reagan, Clinton and Obama's play books.

Reagan said speak no ill of any Republican. The liberal nutcases violate this daily.

Clinton pandered to his base when things were going tough. After he was caught lying under oath he shifted way left.

Obama plays to the liberal base when times are good or when they are bad.

No the lesson is not to play to the left, it is that if the moderates want more power they have to include the conservatives that are the base of the party.
