That doesn't make sense. When he talked about al Qaeda on the campaign trail, it was almost always in the context of AQ in Pakistan. Which has no connection to AQ in Mali or Yemen. AQ in Pakistan most definitely is on its heels. AQ in Yemen has been causing more and more trouble.

He could have used that instead of doing an elaborate coverup that was bound to fail.
