Cary, two other things that I forgot to say. One is that many of the Muslims here horror stories to say that seem unreal to me (and I am already aware some real ones). It seems that stories of abuse are circulated and added to by everyone who retells it. As a result, many of them are absolutely horrified of the prospect of having to deal authorities. It doesn't really matter if those stories are not completely true. Their fears (especially the less educated ones) are quite real and very big (may be about what the American Jews felt in 50s?). Even the highly educated ones are reluctant to criticize the government over the phone. I can't tell how scared the American Jews were in the 40s, but I would think you'd sympathize.

On another note, I never really understood the roots of anti-Semitism. If you or others have material on it, by all means pm me on it.

Which brings me to what you said about Japan and anti-Semitism despite having no Jews. How do you factor that in your assessment of Muslim population's view of Jews?

PS As I said, I've had very diverse circles. Of all the prejudices, religious prejudice is the one I understand the least. A few days ago, Sunni extremists open fire to Shia Muslims during prayer in their mosque in Pakistan. Seven people were killed among them a 9 year old boy. So I am not sure the image of Muslim/Jewish relations you have is accurate. It seems that in absence of Jews, other Muslims will do just fine for those filled with hate.

PPS I forgot to mention the army doctor I talked about was black himself.
