Just heard Sen Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) on Fox say that in California 1/3 of health care dollars are spent on administration. That's a hellufalot - and the number strikes me as probably being realistic.

He also said that we spend 3 times per capita on health care compared to UK. Among other things, the issue is probably that our system ends up costing a lot on the margin -- for instance, if we see a person who suddenly becomes confused, do we "watch" him, or do we do a CT scan? And if it turns out that he has an intracerebral hemorrhage, do we monitor him and control his blood pressure, or do we helicopter him out to be seen by a neurosurgeon and have surgery?

We do not have long waits, like in Canada or UK. That means that we must maintain a certain 'excess capacity'. If our hospitals were fully occupied most of the time, waits would be inevitable.
