How dare Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez imply that Nancy Pelosi is racist, Maureen Dowd demanded to know today in a column that showed how out of touch she and Pelosi are.
Dowd started by saying how AOC beguiled her from the start.
By the start, she meant after AOC primaried Joe Crowley in a race the Times ignored.
Dowd wrote, "I loved the bartender-makes-good Cinderella story, the shake-up-the-capital idealistic dreams, the bravado about how the plutocrat president from Queens wouldn’t know how to deal with a Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx."
She is not Puerto Rican. She was born in the Bronx as was her father. Her mother was born in Puerto Rico.
Dowd wrote, "I imagined the most potent feminist partnership in American history: Nancy Pelosi as sensei, bringing her inside game, and AOC, the Karate Kid with a wicked Twitter game."
There is a 50-year age gap between the two, which figuratively is wider than the gap between New York and San Francisco. Dowd's fantasy of Pelosi mentoring AOC was farfetched. Pelosi presides over more than 200 Democrats in the House. Unless she took a shine to AOC, this was not going to happen.
And it did not happen.
Dowd and the Democrat Establishment for which she stands, want Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to know her place. She should wait her turn.
Of course, if Obama had waited his turn he never would have been president. Hillary would have been so toxic as president that she would have ruined Democrat chances for decades to come. You have to seize the day.
But Dowd does not see it this way. She demanded to know just who do AOC and three other freshmen congresswomen of color think they are?
I will answer that.
They think they are as good as the press says they are. For decades now, Democrats have said Republicans are too white. Democrats said someday soon, whites will be a minority and black people and Hispanic people and Muslims will push them out of power.
White Republicans had better watch out, they said.
But long before white people are a plurality in the nation, they will be a minority in the Democrat Party.
Seven years ago, Gallup said white people made up 60% of the Democrat Party.
As that percentage shrinks, minorities demand more power in the party. And the way that power within the party is to play the race card.
Dowd does not get it.
She wrote, "Pelosi told me, after the AOC Squad voted against the House’s version of the border bill and trashed the moderates — the very people who provided the Democrats the majority — that the Squad was four people with four votes. She was talking about a legislative reality. If it was a knock, it was for abandoning the party.
"That did not merit AOC’s outrageous accusation that Pelosi was targeting 'newly elected women of color.' She slimed the speaker, who has spent her life fighting for the down-trodden and who was instrumental in getting the first African-American president elected and passing his agenda against all odds, as a sexist and a racist."
Translation from Dowdie to English: Some of Pelosi's best friends are black, dammit.
But it was Dowd's next line that had me howling, "AOC should consider the possibility that people who disagree with her do not disagree with her color."
Oh really?
Is that so?
What a revelation after all these years of calling people who did not vote for Obama racist, after calling the tea party racist, after calling President Donald John Trump (recipient of two awards from Jesse Jackson) racist and after calling anyone who disagrees with any Democrat talking point a Nazi, suddenly Dowd wants to lecture us on "the possibility that people who disagree with her do not disagree with her color."
This is the Lone Ranger moment for dowager white Democrats like Dowd and Pelosi.
I am delighted.
It could not happen to a more deserving group of prigs.
They played with the fire of racism and were scorched.
White liberals wanted to use Women of Color to promote a socialist agenda by attacking white people.
And they are.
They are attacking the Democrat ones.
Bu-bu-but I supported Obama does not work, as Slow Joe Biden is learning, too.
