The ideal would be precise "lab" tests, combined with"real world" controlled experiment (something like what your co-op did, but double blind, and with attention paid to eliminating or accounting for factors that where not the same).

For a really large difference you don't have to be so careful. A relatively consistent 20% difference would easily be noticed, and no one would doubt it, but 1% is trickier.

OTOH I think 1% greater mileage, at the very least suggest that there won't be a big problem with reduced mileage.
