Carl: I don't think the SEC is protecting anybody except themselves. Found an interesting article in Fortune regarding a case they are bringing against a fund-manager that basically has done nothing. Seems 1) the SEC is severely understaffed, that certainly explains why they can't even visit the GRNO site even though their order questioned the testing of the equipment and why we get a form letter from our representatives 2) they are extremely vindictive and are intolerant of individuals questioning their procedures and objectives (that's interesting given the fact that we still live in a democracy wherein questioning of procedures and criticisms are historically a healthy part of the system) 3) and because of these characteristics they are prone to dreaming stuff up to cover their collective under-staffed, immature asses. 4) accountability is almost nill and 5) the Internet is a perfect witch hunt arena for an understaffed, archaic regulatory agency.
