I'm not surprised you're not familiar with IBM's famous blunder:

IBM looked set to dominate the business computer market when they launched their 5150 Personal Computer back in 1982. They outsourced the operating system to a young company called Microsoft, but made the costly mistake of selling them the licence for $50,000. What this essentially meant was that IBM could not stop other companies making computers compatible with its own machines if they used Microsoft's DOS operating system. Now Microsoft had all the proprietary clout, enabling it to become one of the biggest companies in the world.
