No, actually they also outlawed ownership of swords. I suppose you could kill someone with chopsticks if you had the time and inclination. But the way Japan did this (with arbitrary police powers) is not a pattern that a freedom loving country like the US could imitate. For example, in a multi-ethnic society it would look bad if we sent the police on door to door searches through minority neighborhoods looking for illegal weapons. Since Japan has almost no minorities, they don't have to worry about that sort of nicety. They go where they want. And the evidence is always valid for a court of law.
