I never got that far.

When I tried to install True Image on my laptop, it ran out of disk space. (I only have a little over 100MB free.)

I DID get past the point where it checked for a WD drive.

Perhaps others may run a more complete test.

P.S. Not too much work for a failed restore. I have an image of my laptop's system, known to be both current and good, made by PowerQuest's Drive Image saved on a CD.

You make a very valid point. No matter how one makes back-ups of their system, unless they KNOW that recoveries are possible, they're not protected totally. Unfortunately, the only way to achieve certainty is through testing, and here, failure can be devastating.
