IDC Dell marches on gaining share from Compaq. There is no need to try to overstate the results nor to diminish them. The time is not far off when Compaq will be looking to catchup with Dell, but it would not be good for Dell to rush the moment. Dell is growing steadily at a pace that is sustainable, as each new rise requires either more factory space or improved methods of production. A giant push could make Dell number one quickly, but would cause tremendous strain in the organization to maintain the level. Dell will reach the top through persistant and predictable gains. TP
