Better than letting the mastiff continue to work on a barely live animal .. which it would have.
It's not that. Obviously the raccoon needed to be put out of its misery. But doing it in front of the kids is something I would have disapproved of.

Anyway, it's not my business to tell my friend how to raise his kids, and besides, I trust that he's raising them as well or even better than I would have if they were my own.

But as a general rule, I think this sort of stuff should not be appropriate for little kids (i.e. pre-teen). This is grown-up stuff, like the birds and the bees.
