I think that depends on the background of the family. For many folks putting a coon out of its misery would be no big deal. Like slaughtering farm animals which I saw done lots as a child.

OTOH I've found a raccoon and a possum in our garbage can before and I wouldn't have considered killing them in front of my grandkids. They don't have the background I did.
