MSFT beats EPS estimate of 51 cents by 6 cents, will lift most seaworthy boats.
MICROSOFT CORP. (MSFT) 87 1/8 +1 1/8. Giant software concern posted fiscal 2nd qtr
net of $0.57 a share, well ahead of Wall Street estimates of $0.51 a share. In fact, latest
figure exceeded the high-end of the earnings estimate range of $0.55 a share. In the
year-ago period, company earned $0.41 a share. Revenue in the quarter grew by 22% to
$2.68 billion from year-ago level of $2.195 billion. And while the latest revenue and
earnings trend are very positive for the stock, the company did warn that it expects slower
earnings growth in FY98 (which starts in July) as a result of reduced revenue growth from
maturing product lines and margin pressures from increased R&D spending and new
business ventures. But, such cautionary outlooks are frequently made by this powerful
cash machine as company has a history of playing down future expectations and then
blowing out the earnings expectations. Such is probably the case this time around as well,
although no company is infallible, not even the mighty MSFT machine.
