Good point. It looks like the administration is going to tie the events of 9/11 to Saddam's regime. That may achieve what you suggest.

They've tried that a lot, Michael. And it has yet to work. Not least because trusted folk like Pollack say it's a no go. I noticed that Wolfowitz made a big deal of switching the term "mass destruction" to "mass terror." I thought that undermined his case even further, at least in the absence of compelling evidence that such a tie exists, at the planning, organizational level.

As for the polls, I think what you say remains true, that there is support for going into Iraq and the levels are quite high but much of that support, and I forget the numbers, is granted on the condition of the participation of other nations or the approval of the UNSC, or some such variant. Thus, I gather the lesson is go if you must but we, much of the American public, aren't along for the ride unless you've convinced some large portion of the rest of the world of the necessity of the invasion.
