Hi all; Geek.com suggests Intel delaying DDR until Infineon trial completion:
PC133 to get 1/3 of P4 marketshare - EBNews ran a commentary piece on Intel's forecast that PC133 SDRAM memory will be used in 1/3 of the P4 market this year. Presumably, RDRAM will be the other 2/3. EBNews points out that there would have to be a large amount of P4/PC133 sales towards the end of the year in order to make up 1/3 of all P4 sales over the year. This is quite interesting. It would indicate that Intel will really push the P4 as their low- and high-end chip this year. They've already said they will have P4 machines at under $1,000 by the end of 2001. They will have to, running PC133, in order to sell the percentages they are forecasting. I think that maybe Intel could be pushing too hard with their P4. Another interesting point is that, "although Intel steadfastly denies accelerating its own DDR chipset for Pentium 4 for a fourth-quarter launch, key memory and motherboard makers believe that will happen." Of course, Intel will first wait to make sure that Rambus loses their patent trials before pushing DDR, otherwise Rambus may ask them for a piece of every chip/chipset that they sell. geek.com
Also, from the same source, a commentary on the anti-Rambus case art I earlier noted:
Quicks: PowerLeap and Rambus - Overclockers.com has a review of a PowerLeap ProMMX Adapter that allowed them to turn a 233MHz Pentium box into a 500MHz K6 box. I happen to have a 233MHz Pentium floating around my office, so this made me curious. I'm not sure how much the ProMMX costs, but they listed their entire upgrade price as US$110. Browsing through HardOCP, I came across a case review at GamingIn3D.com that has some interesting anti-Rambus case art if you scroll down to the bottom. This sort of thing used to be reserved for Chevy or Ford lovers, but now it has transitioned to the computer world.
