Dell marches on gaining share from Compaq
Dell marches on gaining share, but not much of it from Compaq except in commercial desktops. Dell has a great sales model in that space, great execution, a very workable service model, and manufacturing which matches customer needs. There is a good chance that Dell will overtake CPQ in the commercial desktop space.

But they are not even in the game in the consumer space (by choice). They are way out of the park on enterprise components, and although they will do well there, they are very unlikely to catch any of the big 3 (for reasons I have covered in detail here).

Dell will reach the top through persistant and predictable gains
I agree that Dell will deliver persistent and predictable gains but I believe it is unrealistic to expect them to be the 'top computer company'. It also would probably not be good for Dell investors if they attempt to achieve that goal since it would require a complete change in their business model, about like the one needed by the 'big 3' to compete with Dell effectively in the desktop space (which I think is equally unlikely).
