The point is we have allowed the course of culture to take such drastic turns that we have damaged the very fabric of human development. We no longer know what it means to develop into a person of large hearted virtue let alone purposefully nurture such character. The result is societal members who are not only pitiable but not properly cared for. A nation of homeless and isolated creatures ready, and is some cases, willing to act out their despondency on the rest of us.

We accept leaders who are corrupt liars and even promote that character as necessary. It is no wonder avaricious and narrow minded conflict are status quo for day in day out endeavor.

>>"Irregardless (Irrespective) of the pathogenesis of mental illness, there is no way you can condone a machine gun with huge clip."

I am not a gun owner. However, if armed marauders take to the streets (as has happened in history and is happening in other parts of the world in modern times) I would condone the use of a machine gun with a huge clip. If widespread civil conflict breaks out, I would condone the use of any weaponry that is effective in defending one’s position. If a corrupt government tries to enslave or oppress the citizenry, I would condone any weaponry needed to secure freedom. I seem to remember you stating you live in a sheltered community where you don’t have a concern about such things. I don’t see any reason to have or promote the ownership of guns in such conditions. On the other hand, I have lived on a ranch, twenty five miles from the nearest town (no control over who decides to venture up the drive way) and I have lived in inner cities where gangs were powerful. In both circumstances I would condone the ownership of whatever weaponry is needed to deter home invasion, or in the worst case scenario, for protection.

We have the obligation to see to the best interests of one another including other creatures, while protecting our right to personal autonomy using whatever means necessary. In a utopian society no conflict of any sort would indicate the need to use coercive influences. That has never been the case on planet Earth. So practical realism suggests we should trust our fellow man but lock up the valuables, and to walk softly but carry a big stick.
