Can someone explain what happened to cause today's (May 8, 2013) intraday chart?

I am interested in how shorting operates on MCP. This was unusual mid-day activity that covered a range of 5.60 to 6.07 with swings up of 7.3% and down of 7.7%. Are traders covering their shorts starting at 1pm? Are sellers depleted by 1:15pm? Why the linear "avalanche" till closing? Is it oversold at 3:45 and bargain hunters moving in anticipation of tomorrow afternoon's earning report? Is this typical of high shorted stocks with characteristics like MCP?
