SF Fed's report--U.S. stock mkt levels "very high"

By Jose Paulo Vicente

NEW YORK, April 13 (Reuters) - U.S. stock market levels are currently very high, suggesting investors no longer see equities as a relatively risky bet, a senior official at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco said in a report.

''Even without a further earnings squeeze in 1998, the level of the stock market is very high,'' Jack Beebe, director of research at the San Francisco Fed wrote in a report published Monday on the bank's World Wide Web site.

''It's quite likely that investors no longer see equities as relatively risky and that we have entered a new era of high P/Es (price/earnings ratio) that could extend for some time,'' he said, adding that the Japanese stock market fit the same profile before 1990.
