Democracy is terrifying to many people who haven't had it, as is evidenced by the announcement I have just heard on CNN -- that Sunni parties are pulling out of the forthcoming election. Reason given: security. Probable real reason: fear of losing. Is this a negotiating ploy for guarantees? I wouldn't doubt it, but time will tell. (Of course, for CNN, it was an opportunity to cry "American failure." But we all know their position.)
