Kaiser says that Vandersande gets asked that a lot - will De Beers mothball the AK pipes. He responds that if they have high value stones and at least a 15% internal rate of return, they will go into production. This is the central question, though - the percentage value of quality gemstones vs industrial grit. Gem value is going up while low-grade diamond value is going down, and this is expected to continue, partly because the low-grade will be competing with synthetics.

"For the up and coming generation of Canadian diamond producers, the key to success is to supply the 3 grainer plus market, not the 3 grainer minus market."
