Krakatau volcano (Indonesia): eruption continuous, vulcanian explosions
Tuesday Jul 10, 2018

Vulcanian eruption at Krakatau on 7 July 2018 (image: Iwan from Carita via Andi / VolcanoDiscovery Indonesia)
The explosive activity of the volcano continues and seems to be increasing with strombolian to vulcanian-style explosions from the summit crater.
Ash plumes can be seen on satellite imagery now...

[Strombolian eruptions consist of ejection of incandescent cinder, lapilli, and lava bombs, to altitudes of tens to a few hundreds of metres. The eruptions are small to medium in volume, with sporadic violence.]

[A Vulcanian eruption is a short, violent, relatively small explosion of viscous magma (usually andesite, dacite, or rhyolite). This type of eruption results from the fragmentation and explosion of a plug of lava in a volcanic conduit, or from the rupture of a lava dome (viscous lava that piles up over a vent).]
