You have correctly identified some of the reasons why Social Security is headed into the red, but the biggest reason is that the payout is too large for the investment into it. I will be receiving my first check in October. I was astonished at how much I will receive even with the relatively high payments I have made.

I believe the biggest part of the problem is the payout is overly generous in proportion to the amounts contributed. Of course for young person starting out today the situation will likely be reversed.
