RE: Several money management groups have strongly supported the merger

Several money mgmnt groups hailed IBM's buyout of ROLM. In the end, IBM took a $2,000,000,000 bath on that one. Most questioned IBM's buyout of Lotus, and predicted failure. Of corse IBM confounded the analysts.

What the analyst say is by-and-large irrelevant. Lucent/Octel may be the winning combination or it may bust. On that, we will see. But, regardless of how Lucent does as a VM company (they failed on their own, maybe they can do better with Octel), Lucent will thrive as a leading provider of switches and telephony NW products. That is for certain.
