FT -- <<You may get a few parrot-converts>>

C'mon. Terry, no one 'round these parts is trying to "convert" anybody. Leave that up to the folks to the north. We're just discussing something that has all those earmarks of a feel-good, Washingtonian let's-avoid-talk-about-the-budget-and-our-possible-legal-problems tripe with which a few overeager, underinformed school administrators hope to make political hay. Leave the talk about vampires and sucking blood where it belongs - in one of Janice's juicier recipes.

I have three kids. No public school honcholissimo is gonna tell me or my kids that they have to "volunteer" time to some godawful project or other. If the kids want to offer their time, fine.

Private schools operate under different rules, and can "require" any volunteer program (or for that matter, forced labor) they want. Let's not confuse the issues.

Don't confuse the Jefferson vs Roosevelt issues, either; the Industrial Revolution changed the rules completely and irrevocably. It's been almost 200 years since agrariana ruled.
