Brumar,
That is a very disingenuous attempt on your part to say that there is no money in the stimulus plan directed for Katrina recovery. In the first place nearly $100 billion has been allocated to “all” states that have incurred Katrina related impact. The fact is that there are still billions of this money that hasn’t been spent….just sitting there! Also, in the case of Louisiana and Mississippi their governors have indicated that they will not accept any of the stimulus funding, so what difference does it make as to the amount of money directed especially for their states? And finally, the stimulus package was allocated out to states on a pro-rata basis…California getting the largest amount and Texas getting the second largest amount…….but in the case of Texas, again the governor has indicated he will not accept or request the funding. I’m willing to take any bet that not one state will end up not taking what has been approved for them!

“The federal government has already allocated a substantial amount of money to Gulf Coast reconstruction. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), as of July 2007 the federal government had appropriated $94.8 billion for Katrina recovery. Congress has allowed the National Flood Insurance Program to borrow another $17 billion from the government to cover the deficit it racked up paying out Katrina claims. The federal government has also created $16 billion in targeted tax breaks through Gulf Opportunity (GO) Zone credits and other programs.”
