DEMYSTIFYING ETHERNET OVER SONET

As if it needed any help, SONET has received a life extension through the implementation of new framing and traffic management techniques known as:

Generic Framing Procedure (GFP)

Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) and

Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS)

Through the use of these protocols enormous bandwidth savings can be achieved over existing private and public SONET facilities. For example, where 200 MB/s Fiber Channel storage traffic ordinarily requires an OC-12 (611 MB/s) of SONET capacity for transport, by mapping this payload in increments of 50 Mb/s only the 200 Mb/s is required. The remaining 411 Mb/s of capacity is thus freed up for allocation to other traffic streams.

The white paper below from Larscom, entitled "Demystifying Etherent over SONET," does a good job of fulfilling its title.
