Principled conservatives will either not vote at all or more likely vote 3rd party for a real conservative candidate. It happens all the time in state politics. In my state a conservative running for Governor won 5%. That's more than enough to throw an election. Nader likely through 2000 to Bush with the 3,000,000 votes he received.

I mean, Rudy doesn't have just one problem with conservatives that they might overlook, he's basically a New York City liberal with a tough record on crime. His views are much further to the left than most Americans, even than a lot of conservative Democrats. Rudy's moderate to liberal social positions do not win elections in middle America.
