news today:

Study: North American POS Printer Market Surges 11% in 1998
MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 2, 1999--Taking its cue from strong POS sales and continued success of new thermal technologies, the housed POS printer market surged 11% in 1998, according to a new study released by IHL Consulting Group.

Shipments of Thermal Receipt Printers grew 51% over 1997 while the newer Hybrid Printers (Thermal Receipt/Impact Slip Printer) jumped 38% during 1998. According to the study, other printer technologies in the sector (Impact Receipt, Slip Only, and Multi-station Impact Printers) continued to decline in 1998.

''Not only are thermal printers enjoying the growth due to replacement of POS units in lieu of Y2K,'' added Buzek, ''but these printers have been favored by high-growth companies in key market segments for their speed and the enhanced customer service abilities they provide. Home Depot (NYSE:HD - news), Office Depot (NYSE:ODP - news), Best Buy (NYSE:BBY - news), and Barnes and Noble (NYSE:BKS - news) are just some of the fast growing retailers that had sizeable rollouts of thermal-based printers in 1998.''
