Bank One, Schwab and others are competing up front for customers, expanding their reach with more virtual banks, Portals, etc.

I think this is absolutely right. The banks have a tremendous franchise opportunity here. Bank One gets that apparently. The choice is whether to leverage your primary business or to invest in technology for an at best supplementary business where scalability is a risk.
