Actually the Shah or Iran's fall started before Carter, during Gerald Ford's and Nixon's time....Carter had no choice but to let the Shah fall...the Iran-Contra bunch working for Reagan promised Iran lots of arms shipments if they didn't release the hostages until after Reagan could beat Carter. That was a dirty trick which did Carter in. Plenty of arms then went to Iran, both before and after the Contra scandals.
Your usual mix of half-truths and fiction. The Shah went into exile on January 16, 1979, two years after Carter took the oath of office. Carter had plenty of time to shore up the Shah...if he wanted to. Actually, Carter's emphasis on human rights issues probably helped to undermine the Shah.
As for the allegations that Reagan's people interfered with the release of the hostages, that is a complete fiction. If you have any evidence to the contrary, please post it. Please, no highly placed unnamed family sources from Houston.
After the election, Carter unfroze over $8 billion in Iranian assets, real money in those days, and provided Iran protection from lawsuits. I'm sure that some of that money went to buy arms. Thank you, Jimmy Carter.
Also, Iraq invaded Iran in September 1980. The hostages had become a diversion. Iran certainly did not want a hostile Reagan administration, which is exactly what they got. Remember that the U.S. came down on the side of Iraq. Iran did not get any arms from the Reagan people until Iran-Contra. |
