New modem offers both G.Lite and V.90 compatibility with speeds up to 1.5 Megabits per second

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 1999-- Viking Components Inc., one of the fastest growing manufacturers of component technology, Thursday announced its first product for the emerging broadband market with a G.Lite, Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL)/V.90 modem.

Scheduled for a first quarter launch, this new modem will provide home and small business users with the high-speed, ''always-on'' connectivity of ADSL while also offering V.90 56K functionality for added flexibility.

''With the total number of worldwide DSL subscribers expected to reach two million next year, Viking is growing its communications product line into the broadband arena to meet the increasing demand for high-bandwidth solutions,'' said Sam Inman, co-CEO, Viking Components. ''Not only will the Viking G.Lite modem offer a simple way to receive high-speed Internet access, but it is intended to be affordable for our users.''

''ADSL is poised to become the solution of choice for consumers,'' said Frank Valdespino, product marketing manager, Viking Components, ''but many areas of the country are just beginning to introduce ADSL service. During this transition, customers can easily deploy Viking's G.Lite/V.90 modem with the flexibility to utilize its broadband capabilities, as service is available. And because of the added V.90 functionality, a customer can still use dial-up to access items like corporate e-mail accounts and fax applications.''

Viking's G.Lite modem will offer faster Internet access at downstream speeds up to 1.5 Mbps and the flexibility of using existing dial-up applications, all through regular phone lines, thereby eliminating the need for additional lines. It will incorporate Lucent Technologies WildWire(TM) ADSL communications chip set technology, allowing users to download from the Internet at approximately 25 times faster than today's analog modem technology.
