Harmonic to Cut Work Force By 10% Amid Weak Revenue
A WSJ.COM News Roundup

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Harmonic Inc. said it planned to reduce its work force by about 10% to bring costs more in line with lower revenue levels.

The cable-equipment maker said it expects to reduce its overall work force by 100 jobs, which is expected to result in a one-time charge of about $800,000 in the first quarter of 2001.

The effort to lower corporate expenses comes in response to decisions by some of Harmonic's major customers to scale back capital spending in recent periods, the company said. Harmonic's major customers include RCN Corp. and AT&T Corp.'s broadband unit.

"We have been facing challenging market conditions and are taking the necessary steps to reduce expenses without damaging our long-term competitiveness," said Anthony J. Ley, president and chief executive officer, in a prepared statment.
