The prospects for fiber optics may not be quite as rosy as they were a year ago, but they're hardly bleak. In the meantime, JDSU is selling below book value. When was this last the case?

That's hard to say since there have been so many acquisitions. On a 3-year chart we're up 400%. But this doesn't tell much since we're not comparing apples and apples.

Bottom line, the industry is still expanding, just not at the pace it was last year. That was a period of manic spending based on the Internet explosion, and had to slow at some point.

What we're experiencing now is over-kill. In the words of T.S. Eliot, "You murder to dissect."

Eventually we'll be evaluated against the competition and not against ourselves.
