Not that any of you need it, but be aware that "The Elements of Style" is now online.

About fifty posts ago, I noted and clipped the following errors, which appeared in quotes included in Kurtz's column. It seems to me that people having their quotes published ought to know better. I seem to recall that there was a time when publishers cleaned up quotes so as not to embarrass the speaker. I wonder what became of that practice.

<<"I don't think the media feel badly anymore covering 30-year-old wars or personal scandals," says Larry Sabato, a University of Virginia political scientist and press critic.>>

As for "Charles' friend," that's the way I was taught. I remember it clearly. I learned only a few years ago that it either wasn't correct then or that the rules have since changed.

EDIT: Just went back and changed a "that" to a "which" in this post. If we weren't talkin about grammar, I would have let the error go. <g>
