Windseye: During the summer, COMPAQ's profile has risen in the UK. It has innumerable radio spots - you can hear them if you go to CPQ UK home site. Also, for a long time, it was the main banner on the MSN Network Home page for the UK.
It also had a number of classy ads for portables in the quality press. COMPAQ is also prominently featured in all the big speciality PC retails stores. They are not that plentiful in the UK and are usually located in out of town retail parks.

But DELL was much more prominent on TV in the UK with very attractive ads addressing the commercial market and others building brand image featuring Michael Dell.

Although things change - the UK is not oriented towards buying from mail-order catalogues in the same way as the US and Canada. There is a much stronger tradition of using shops. I would think this is true of the rest of Europe - West and East. I would also think that difficult transportation and telecommunication logistics would not favour the direct sales model for hardware in much of Africa and Indian.
