NEC To Halt DRAM Output In U.S. Due To Falling Profitability
Saturday, April 7, 2001
PALO ALTO, Calif. (Nikkei)--NEC Corp. (6701) announced Friday that it will soon halt production of DRAM chips at its plant in Roseville, California, due to the deteriorating profitability caused by the global semiconductor market slump.

The plant -- the sole production facility of NEC Electronics Inc., a U.S. subsidiary of NEC -- will concentrate its resources on production of more profitable system chips. The subsidiary's work force will be cut by 700 from the current 1,600.

The factory has been producing 39,000 silicon wafers for DRAMs and system chips a month. This will be reduced to 25,000 silicon wafers a month after it stops producing DRAMs.

NEC will pay about 8 million dollars in severance pay but will save some 90 million dollars in fixed costs a year, NEC officials said. (The Nihon Keizai Shimbun Saturday evening edition)
