"What the article shows is that the necessary research is losing its funding, even though it is making progress."

That was a demo plant. That is different than research. I do not know what the particular problem is other than runaway costs.

"I had a crazy idea. All the soda manufacturers use tons of CO2 annually. Why not sell the CO2 from coal plants to them? Right now, it's being manufactured for them in other ways."

First - CO2 that goes into soda pop winds up in the atmosphere when the bottles are opened - either as phizz or burps (sorry if too gross). (In beer the CO2 is a by product of the fermentation process. That makes beer a non green product - don't drink any!) The CO2 comes from places like ammonia plants where CO2 is a byproduct. Ammonia plants take Methane and react it with steam and air to make H2 and CO2 and N2. The N2 is reacted with the H2 to make NH3. The CO2 is removed prior to the ammonia reaction. The CO2 recovery process is very energy intensive. I actually worked on the startup of an Ammonia plant and know the technology.
