NeXT's Mach operating system is a very good one, it is a micro-kernel Unix-based OS with pre-emptive multi-tasking, multi-threading, and virtual memory. It's far superior to Win/NT or Apple's OS on these terms, and is probably comprable to BeOS but is more mature and better tested. It seems like a good choice, particularly because Avie Tevanian, NeXT's VP of engineering, wrote it originally.

It's true that the OPENSTEP environment runs on Win/NT, but it has more experience running on Mach, and Mach was generally designed to support it. And there are a lot of questions about how to integrate with the Win/NT windowing environment that are non-issues when using Mach.

This is definitely true. We're going to have to wait and see what they announce. There are a lot of things to consider and I doubt we'll be happy with ALL of their decisions...
