Dear Joan,

You have I fear learned to avoid trouble in too many unfree places and understand the need to conform. But I was born free! I have always spoken and written (without restraint or prior self-censorship) what I believed to be true or funny. I have been thrown out of class and school and college for speaking out. I've been fired from God knows how many jobs. I've been court-martialed for insolence and insubordination (my specialty). I've walked the walk. I've paid my dues. I'm getting very old. Don't think I'll change much now. Thanks for your comfort.
